Lost and Found

What counts as a self-portrait? In a sense, any image a photographer makes is a sort of self-portrait. How an image is composed, what’s included and what’s not are all reflections of aspects of the artist’s “self.” In that sense, this is a self-portrait project.

In 2022, I was in a season of intense grief. It was during this time that I learned I would soon have to find a new place to live. All felt lost. Even the space I’d called home for years was being stripped away and a new home was still just an abstract idea. As I moved through this time, I was in a sort of limbo. I was drawn to the idea of using photography to understand the version of myself that was taking shape.

Moving requires us to touch literally every object we own, and, reciprocally, every part of who we are is touched by the experience. As I cataloged my belongings, I was reminded of parts of myself I had long forgotten and was able to see new aspects of myself that have emerged through the chaos of the last year.
