Assignment 4: Photo Series

Phil, Longfellow Bridge Revisited

I experience this bridge nearly everyday in some way—either by crossing it or seeing it from afar.  Today I went out on a very cloudy day with the intent to see it anew and to get some B & W photos.

Rachel, Springtime Strolls & Smells

This series is about exploring fresh smells after a spring rainstorm through the eyes (and nose) of my dog. On a typical walk through our neighborhood, my dog will stop and smell the roses… and the grass, the moss, the leaves, and every smell available. Thus, these walks turn into slow springtime strolls guided by her nose.

Anne, Feeling of Spring

As the colors of Spring arrive, I am reminded of the things I love and that inspire me. For me Spring is the time things come alive again.

Francine, Rediscovering my Morning Tea

I love the aroma and flavor of my favorite ginger and turmeric tea.  By experiencing it through the camera lens, I saw details I had previously overlooked: the star pattern created by the light in the mesh of the diffuser; the tones and textures of the herbs; the energy of the water as it boils; the glow of the morning sun on the stream as it enters the cup; and the joy of learning to capture steam in a photograph!

Joyce, Waiting for May 15th

I have been fortunate to live in close proximity to the ocean and the local harbor for decades. Marshfield has a substantial commercial Lobster and Tuna fishing fleet, and I have enjoyed observing the Lobster Fishermen and their boats through the years. The Massachusetts Commercial Lobster Fishing season was a year round operation until 2014. Now the Lobster Fishermen are unemployed for more than 1/3 of the calendar year, due to the annual presence of endangered North Atlantic Right Whales feeding in Cape Cod Bay, from January to mid May. Lobster traps may not be present in Cape Cod Bay during this time, to avoid whale entanglement in the ropes attached to the traps. Regulations have been put in place for breakaway rope systems on the traps to protect the whales, at the fishermen’s expense.

The 2024 Massachusetts Commercial Lobstering season begins May 15.
